Sound through sight
“Look
at walls splashed with a number of stains, or stones of various mixed colours.
If you have to invent some scene, you can see there resemblances to a number of
landscapes, adorned with mountains, rivers, rocks, trees, great plains, valleys

Concept
of artworks
All the artworks chosen for this
exhibition were drawn to Rock jazz music. Namely to the band Deep Purple. The
aim of the exhibition was to find ways to translate the music to a personalized
visual language. The artworks are inspired by music and its analytical
translation to visual art.
The exhibition is divided into
two sections, black and white series where the artist wished to preserve the
impressions and atmosphere observed from her immediate environment. These were
drawn to songs from the album “Turning to Crime”. The second series is of
abstract drawings reflects time and motion via analytical translation of the instruments
played in the songs, “Apre’x Vous” instrumental version. “Wring that neck” and
“dancing in my sleep” There are connections to the meanings of images and
shadows and sound to sense associations.
Listening to music often conjures
images in the listener’s mind that can induce emotions in the process. The
theme of the natural world draws the viewer to consider alternative imaginary
meanings and its symbolic associations, which exist between them. The choice serves as a metaphor to varied
consciousness levels perceived by the artist to express deconstruction and
destruction elements. (Watchful Eyes). The spectator is invited to participate
in or identify with the visual language that the artist explored in her search.
The theme was explored in pastel and clear acrylic glazes on paper via
spontaneous linear marks and a fragmental approach.
Translation of music and its
perception
In the abstract artworks the
artist did not conjure an image initially with a song but in abstract mark
making technique following a linear and dots technique, a project called Sound
Travel. Whereby the analysis of the whole composition of the song and parts of
and later segments of the individual instruments, were drawn in blocks. This
was a gradual process and was divided into levels of transformative layers
perceived as a visual symbols or images. Working in layers upon layers whereby
(Watchful Eyes) the images appear and disappear using pastel and acrylic
washes. It was a process that revealed transformations from how the translated
sounds were perceived by memorizing the song numerous times.
The
Drawings & Technique: The interpretation and perception and sensory fusion of Rock music to painting
In the drawings in graphite, (Black
& white) are semi realistic artworks and inspired by immediate environment
of Neot Semadar. An emphasis on tree trunks like the acacia and "yanbut”
is evident throughout. The artist experienced shapes, texture and movement
creating landscapes that are referred to as maps drawing to the beat and tempo
of the music.
In the abstract drawings the artist
demonstrates sensory fusions through sight, sound, taste and hearing. Ways of
experiencing, seeing images the world of natural elements that the artist
perceived from the musical composition. Prints of various stages of the art
work (Watchful Eyes) demonstrate the levels of transformation between each
perception of the instruments used in the songs. Through numerous listening
sessions images likened in the imagination to symbols like waves, rock art,
architectural building, plants and bubbles appeared once further listening
sessions and the song was played to and memorized. The artist perceived the
colour choices intuitively when seeing a particular color upon hearing a
certain musical pitch or combination of musical notes.
The artworks represented in this
exhibition reflect the artists’ expression of translating a musical composition
to painting via analytical views of sound perceived. The music dictates the
direction of the visual composition in abstract form. Particularly Accents and
descents of the music and translating sound pitch dictates the direction of
sound in visual terms.
The visual language of the thematic art
works expresses the natural world through analogy, symbolism, Repetitive motifs
and chromo synesthesia. (Type of synesthesia in which sound involuntarily
evokes an experience of colours to a sound).
The particular colours were chosen by changes in instrumentation or
timbre, and higher and lower pitches were associated with lighter and darker
colours, respectively. The artist also experienced shapes, texture, and
movement creating landscape through the listening process of the sound. Whereby the artist explored the cooperation
between the senses (Sight taste and hearing) and the connection between image
and picture and shadows. (Watchful
Eyes).
The artist was also looking to
experiment and explore with different types of media such as pastel mixed with
gesso and clear acrylic medium which were used as glazes wet on wet and be used
as a fixative for each layer. (Watchful Eyes; Sail)
Her research evolved around image and
shadows of which numerous photographic accounts of transformation to the same
songs were done (Watchful Eyes) to arrive at the final piece of artwork.
The artworks were influenced by a
previous exhibition titled “Home” (1996) where the artist explored objects from
the natural world such as rocks, trees and unidentified objects from her immediate
environment.

Drawn on transparent paper. The use of bold reds and blue hues
evokes the tension and release of musical phrases. The music gives a feeling of phases with a
lengthy organ solo. The overall sense of dynamism and movement resonates with
the energy of the musical piece. The rhythm can be noted through lines, shapes
and colours. The tone is varied as the composition is off centre. In this
drawing an analysis of the song was attempted.

what it means to me. The stacked rocks symbolize stability, strength, and
endurance. The trunks symbolize the earthly worlds. The tent symbolizes a
nomadic home.

Visual Music Drawing
Using a grid of squares I chose the colours intuitively
after a few listening sessions memorized song and started from a point
concentrating on accents and descents of the sound lyrics were disregarded.
Drawing real time.
The shapes or organic free flowing characteristics are
colorful and bright giving the drawing a calm effect. The linear marks done to
the organ and electric solo pieces are condensed. There’s repetition in the
first part of the drawing in line with the song.
The last few sessions concentrated on noting the rhythm of
the music after a short ‘warm up’ to be familiarized with the beat of the
sound.
On an emotive and perceptual plain, as an added visual music
“performer”, the lyrics and instrumental sound induce synesthetic experiences.
In the process my being becomes the instrument in which I seemingly “play” upon
the paper with the instrument being the drawn artwork.
The song is an upbeat rhythm and not a heavy rock song with
an impressive organ solo as well an electrical guitar solo.

Second drawing of the song “Apre’x Vous” by Deep Purple on
wooden board brings to mind a boat on watery surface. Colours and vibrant hues
create energy and a sense of movement that depict the sonic qualities of the
song. The dynamic shapes and bold contrast give rise to rhythm and tone of the
instruments.
This is a loosely translation of the song with pastels and
clear gesso glaze on board and conveys the visual perception of the artist to
the listening sessions of the song.

Music: Deep Purple-song Wring That Neck
The translation of music to
visual art technique. Using both hands to draw the artist followed the rhythm
and beat and tempo of the sound after
numerous listening sessions of the song Wring that Neck (Instrumental) Band
Deep Purple Live version In Concert with The London Symphony Orchestra
Selecting the colours
intuitively. Warm colours for ascending
sound and cool colours for descending colours. In this artwork, a series of studies
were conducted of the perception of art and music elements, in the exploration
between Art and Sound with numerous Listening Sessions to sound/music. The
artist used pastel chalks, Pencils and water-based mediums to create an
abstract drawing. Using complementary colours. Blues and Green’s. Although
abstract there are hints of images of plants, sky and water elements.
The music is Jazzy, and upbeat with a powerful organ riff and
guitar solo. The Dominant colours are greens and
blues bright and vivid. The tones are constant and changing. The composition is
also horizontal, that’s how the sound
appeared to the artist visually and free flowing. The mark making is
systematic.
As with Watchful Eyes Technique I used
a technique I developed called Sound Travel that is each dot and line encloses
and defines an area.
Once areas are established, analysis
of levels of sound begins to take shape.
Interpreting ascensions and descents in sound
simultaneously I chose earthly colours and music dictates the direction of the
movement of marks on the paper.

The artwork was drawn with the metaphor of a garden of sorts in mind.
The artwork was done with pastel linear mark making technique on glazed and washes of acrylic medium to the music of the above songs using a technique I developed called sound Travel Project. Whereby I paint the rhythm of the music real time often using both hands to record the beat of the songs.
The
principals of sound Travel are:
Areas of drawing are established, analysis of levels of sound
begins to take shape.
Sensitivity in lines, depth of colour parallel to high pitches or
low.
Directions of sound are noted vertically, horizontally,
diagonally.
Use of both hands for positive and negative polarity sense.
There
are 2 levels to the artwork the first,
level 1 I used pastel shavings in clear acrylic glaze to denote lights and
personal objects.(Photographic account in photographic documentation of still
objects in the home of the artist))

2 I used a technique of wet on wet pastel chalks to the various Rock songs.
Level
3 Complete Drawing
As with Watchful Eyes an acrylic glaze was applied between
layers and pastel was applied wet on wet.

The Titles
“Watchful eyes” and “perfumed Gardens” a double-sided artwork reflects the
theme of the work The Natural World through the observation of areas from
the artist’s immediate surroundings, namely, trees and plants, the vegetable
garden area and home at Neot Semadar Israel.
The method
was analytical a translation of the music of Deep Purple and the instrumental song Apr'ex Vous to the media in layers. A total of 6
layers which were recorded photographically and expressed the transformations
between each layer.
The early
studies in the process of analysis of the song expressed the visual language
that the artist meant to convey as the metaphor of Home which includes
memories, found objects and the connection of the sense perception in an
analytical way to the songs of Deep Purple.
During the
painting of the different levels in Watchful Eyes I had a faint
"feeling" of color when listening to music. But as I got more
emotionally involved in the music, the synesthetic sensations of color would
become stronger, more intense, and pass over to give an "image" of
color.
The sense of
sound to visual art was concerned with the direction of the various instruments
in the song. From Left to right landscape view. The process was of the various
levels and was divided into Levels of listening sessions. These produced
further abstract images. Some images resembled waves. The first three sections
of the song were layered with acrylic gesso level, were an introduction. After
those levels 1, 2, and 3. The symbols were waves, Rock art, a ladder
(Spiritual) temple to the bass instrument, plants-(Washingtonia plant) reflect
the sound of the organ and bubbles to electric guitar to arrive at images which
resemble a tree in a garden. The analysis of the song became clearer from Level
3 whereby I distinguished the sound of the various instruments, namely Bass,
Electric guitar, organ and drums
I identified
8 levels of the drawings, each one glazed with clear acrylic gesso to seal each
image. And in the song I identified 22 sections. Further, my perception of the
sound corresponds to visual symbols.
Levels 1,2,3
are drawings that were overlaid upon each other and reflect the transformation
process whereby symbols like waves, Alpha Beit letters, Rock Art, Temples,
plants appear and bubbles. Each block was drawn with a fresh layered pastel
layer over an image that corresponded to a section of the song.
Level 4
produced new blocks drawn to the songs Fools (Live in London 2002 (Spotify) And
The Mule (Made in Japan 1972) (Spotify) images resemble a tree and plant life
taken from observations in my immediate vicinity.
Level 5 I
blocked an area drawn to Deep Purple Album Gemini suite Drumming solo 3.
Level 6
photographic documentation of Palm trees to the song (instrumental version)
Apre’x Vous
Level 7
Shadows and home area -photographic documentation in this level I researched my
immediate home environment researching shadows and still life images.
Level 8
Titled ”Rows” Drawn section to Deep Purple song Mandrake Root a complete
drawing resembled a palm tree and Hebrew letters. Mandrake root has a heavy
emphasis on drumming.

All the
levels produced an involuntary fusion of the senses through hearing I was
prompted to record objects including plant life from immediate surroundings
The artwork
can be viewed from different angles to depict the song. The artwork can be viewed sideways or
upright. Pastel chalks and pencils were used with acrylic white glaze to set
the composition in between layers. Prelude to drawing to Apre’x Vous was the
song Uncommon man (Instrumental Version and Above and Beyond (Instrumental
Version) for preparation of the materials.
